Community Roles

We like to think of the Andela Open Source Community as a set of concentric circles, where each circle contains community members who perform different roles.
Each circle supports the circle directly outside of it and has access to the circle directly inside of it. This way, all community members have the resources to move inward or outward, depending on their individual goals.
The roles are the following:
- This is the circle of people who are curious about the Andela Community. You are a member of this circle because you are reading this page.
- Powers
- Access to all of the information and communication channels that we make public.
- The ability to edit this wiki.
- Responsibilities
- None
- These are the people who are actively driving projects forward. They have made themselves known to a team captain and are a part of their team.
- Powers
- Support from their team captains and other crewmembers whenever they are stuck.
- Recognition of contributions by the Andela Community in the Community Members page.
- Responsibilities
- Committing to the responsibilities laid out by the member's team captain on the Project Proposals page.
- Suggested time commitment: 3+ hours/week
- Captains are the cutting edge of any team, driving a project forward. These are the people who lead crewmembers on a project. They have been a crewmember of an ACSP before and have been sponsored by another captain.
- Powers
- The ability to approve a Project Proposal and assemble a team of crewmembers.
- The ability to propose projects.
- Access to a Coach for support.
- Responsibilities
- Deciding and communicating expectations for their team.
- Motivating and supporting team members.
- Leading by example in contributing to their project.
- Suggested time commitment: 6+ hours/week
- Coaches are Andela developers, staff, or experienced captains. They are experts in the Andela Way.
- Responsibilities
- Mentoring captains in technical and non-technical ways.
- Advising on issues that captains have on their teams.
- Promoting the projects and team members of their team within the Andela organization.
- Suggested time commitment: 2+ hours/week/team
- Counselors gather the collective knowledge of people inside and outside the community in order to support the coaches and improve the Andela Way. They are constantly seeking out experts in related fields and championing the community within the Andela Organization.
