I have relatively low confidence in the correctness of this merge, since the `sprocket` branch used to validate it is also undergoing upheaval. It at least compiles without warnings, so it should be good enough to get the `sprocket` branch compiling again, and then we can fix up the inevitable errors that were introduced with the merge.
