Appendix C: Deriving descriptions from MARC records:

If deriving description from a MARC record, concatenate the following components together if available to create the description. Expand abbreviations if possible. This may be done with a script.

Description = title component + summary component + scale component. See below on how to formulate each component.

Title component:

• Concatenate fields below in the following order:
  • 245 field, subfields $a +$b: Title
  • 260/264, subfield $c: Date of Publication
    • Do not add questionable publication dates. Remove all copyright symbols.
  • 246 field(s), subfield $a: Varying Form of Title
  • 250 field(s): Edition Statement

Summary component:

• Concatenate fields together in the following order. Skip any field(s) that will not be relevant or coherent in a digital context.
  • 520 field(s): Summary note
  • 500 field(s): General note
  • 505 field(s): Formatted contents note
  • 515 field(s): Numbering peculiarities note
  • 525 field(s): Supplement note
  • 59x field(s): Local JHU notes

Scale component:

• Select one of the following to comprise the scale component:
  • 255 field, subfield $a: Cartographic Mathematical Data
  • 507 field: Scale Note for Graphic Material
