Thanks @ReevesAk. This is at least a partial solution to #174. There is still some problem with connection issues propagating to the interface. We're logging the error, so we should be able to update the UI.
I'd like to merge this PR with only the current fix though. Feel free to look at the other issue separately, but that could be messy.
