This POEM explains the changes required to OpenMDAO if pydantic is to be used for validation/serialization/deserialization and describes some of the issues encountered during the migration process of the OpenMDAO repository. Note that going forward with this sort of implementation would require significant changes to the packages built on top of OpenMDAO as well, e.g., Dymos, Aviary, pyCycle, etc.
