With GitPod rebranding to ONA, it seems they are also changing the direction and pricing model of their service, and what is included in the free tier - to the point it is not usable for our purposes any more. So, instead, let's use GitHub's native Codecpaces offering, which is more than sufficient for incidental firmware building. If more is needed, either pay (pricing is reasonable), use Visual Studio Code with devcontainer support, or use one of the other documented local build environment configurations.
