Will say this here on the top, this PR removes all letterman labcoats,
it also does these things:

  • imageadd: "Standardised the sprite of most if not all standard/corporate labcoats."
  • imageadd: "Colorable labcoats now use the new, standard colorable palette."
  • imageadd: "Uplifted the sprite of long labcoats."
  • rscdel: "Removed all letterman labcoats and the science labcoat."

Now, to explain each change

  • imageadd: "Standardised the sprite of most if not all standard/corporate labcoats."

Basically, if the corporation did not have a specified white color on their wiki page, then their labcoat uses the colorable white palette.

  • imageadd: "Colorable labcoats now use the new, standard colorable palette."
  • imageadd: "Uplifted the sprite of long labcoats."

Hopefully self-explanatory

  • rscdel: "Removed all letterman labcoats and the science labcoat."

Quite honestly? File bloat, and they did not look all that great, these are my arguments for their removal. That's about it.

I think the standardization's pretty good, looks great. Personally I find the reasons for removing the science labcoat and letterman labcoats to be pretty weak.

  • Science labcoats. It's seems kind of arbitrary. CMOs get cool different labcoat styles, poor RD gets shafted again.
(Also if we remove them, in the case we need to backport science labcoats, it's going to be a pain since science-dept labcoats are a baseline mainstay on most SS13 servers)

  • Letterman labcoats. I don't really think they look that all bad, seeing that only the back's different. File bloat is pretty moot because most things are contained sprites now and you can just make a new .dmi if it gets a bit too much. Better yet, make them an overlay, since they're basically the same as the plain corporate labcoats with the letters slapped on the back.

Honestly, I'm saying this because I was the one that personally made the letterman labcoats. It was because I too was updating the labcoats and I removed some stuff, and had to re-add more variants because people got upset. Funny how things repeat themselves.

It does appear to be somewhat arbitrary, and I did not want to argue about it much in the description, but I personally do not really see why it should continue existing? It is the only departmental labcoat left and it's only used for the RD and a cult base map. Also, it looks like an older version of the new Zeng-Hu labcoats.

Though while I do see the issue of the poor RD getting shafted again (as science usually is), I am not sure what the solution here is. The science labcoat is not really representative of a command rank. Maybe the CMO labcoat should get genericised into a SCC command labcoat, or the RD should get their own. That is the issue for a different day. But frankly? I hold no strong opinions on this of the two removals, I will fold immediately if this will hold this PR up.

Letterman labcoats. I don't really think they look that all bad, seeing that only the back's different. The lettermans. Do they look bad? Somewhat, but that is not my issue with them. My issue here is that they double the amount of sprites while only the north-facing part of it is different. You could attempt to alleviate that with worn_overlay, but that can apply to one state at a time. In short, you would cut out two obj sprites while replacing all the mob states with ones that only have the north facing state of them have a logo, or the letters. I do not feel like that is worth the abstraction.

And, opinion time, this is the difference we are talking about:
letterman vs logo

Double the sprites, so instead of a Hephaestus flame logo you get a HI on the back, or a ZI, or NT, that is all. I don't get it.
Only the Idris letterman looked good enough to preserve and it replaces the logo variant because out of the two it looked better.

Honestly, I'm saying this because I was the one that personally made the letterman labcoats. It was because I too was updating the labcoats and I removed some stuff, and had to re-add more variants because people got upset. Funny how things repeat themselves.

The more things change, the more they remain the same. I do get why they were made, variety and all that. Very important, and on Aurora where everyone wants to make their own special snowflake whose labcoat says NT instead of N on the back, or a ZI instead of whatever the Zavodskoi logo is supposed to be. Though, my mailbox will (hopefully) survive people getting upset, do not worry.

I think honestly the removals are fine. The RD "science" labcoat was just not unique enough to require its own unique instance to be added in if I'm being honest. We can probably look into readding it or something similar in a more special appearance inn the future.

As for the lettermans, I'll let this simmer for a bit to gauge community feedback, but from what I've seen, not a whole lot of people use them in comparison to the standard labcoats, and colorables are a thing as well to make someone stand out more. Some of them are cool but are often barely distinguishable from the standard labcoat affair.

Might be better to make lettermans into a jacket instead of a labcoat for the future. Would at least suit the letterman theme more.
