make it possible to change the base_url for our docker image

This would have to work by having the admin get a root shell in the Docker container, then running a command. That command would likely write a file (or set an env variable?) that contains a different base url, then do a full rebuild of the static cocalc webapp code.

So at least a solution just involving a paragraph of documentation could be one way of solving this issue. @haraldschilly – any thoughts?

The following might work (untested):

1. Get a root shell in the Docker image. docker exec -it cocalc bash
2. Create the file /cocalc/src/data/base_url with the base_url in it.
3. Run this code (which is copied from the Dockerfile):

# Build and install all deps
  cd /cocalc/src && \
  . ./smc-env && \
  ./install.py all --compute --web && \
  rm -rf /root/.npm /root/.node-gyp/

4. Completely restart the Docker image, e.g., docker restart cocalc so the hub hopefully restarts with the new base_url.
5. Then visit https://localhost:[port]/base_url/ and see what happens...

This might work are break everything; I don’t know. It’s where I would start.

I forgot about this, but I'll put it on my list for the next week. CoCalc internally does fully support base_url functionality (it's what we use extensively to be able to develop cocalc itself from within a cocalc project). So this is definitely possible with a little bit of configuration. I should really just make it a documented environment variable that is used when starting the docker image.
