How to add a `llms.txt` on Read the Docs?

What's the problem this feature will solve?

I'd like to add a llms.txt file on my Read the Docs project https://llmstxt.org/ and I haven't found any guidance.

The llms.txt file spec is for files located in the root path /llms.txt of a website (or, optionally, in a subpath)

(Emphasis mine) With this, I'm assuming that it could be generated by version. Unsure if it has any disadvantages.

I know how to put assets under /_static but it's not immediately clear to me how to place them at the root (of the version).

Is it not possible to link the llms.txt file from robots.txt or sitemap.xml?

From what you quoted in the description, it seems it's possible to put in a subpath (not sure where, tho). You should be able to generate it and put it there.

We can, but if there's general adoption to put it in the root, like robots.txt, it's not straightforward. Is there a way to direct RTD to drop a file into the root (mkdocs ideally)?

It's only possible if the project is single language and single version.

How the root llms.txt should behave for projects with multiple languages/versions?

You can generate the file with the tool you are using and RTD will serve it as a normal file on /en/latest/llms.txt (I think you can just place any files in the docs dir and mkdocs will copy it as is). Alternatively, if you want for the file to be in the root, I guess you can use an exact redirect /llms.txt -> /en/latest/llms.txt.
