Subject: GSoC 2025 – Inquiry About OpenVINO Desktop App Project Hello everyone! My name is Urvashi, and I’m a second-year Computer Science undergraduate student with a focus on AI/ML and software engineering. I’m proficient in programming languages like JavaScript, Python, C, and Java, and I’m particularly passionate about integrating language models and frameworks into real-world applications. I’ve been exploring the OpenVINO discussion on GitHub regarding the desktop app project, and I’m genuinely excited by the potential of this idea—especially how it encourages the use of NLP models in an offline setting using OpenVINO. I really appreciate the flexibility the project offers in choosing different NLP models and defining use cases. I had a few questions and ideas that I hope you could provide some guidance on: Have there been any updates or changes to this project’s goals or direction compared to the discussions from last year? From a user-experience point of view, I was wondering if we could consider building a voice-enabled chatbot—something that uses ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) or Text-to-Speech models? Or do you think it would be better to prioritize building a fully functional text-based app first? Will the final app be made available for public download, or will it serve primarily as a demonstration within the GitHub repository? Lastly, are there any expectations from the contributors in terms of showcasing the project in blogs, tutorials, or outreach efforts? I’d truly appreciate any suggestions or insights you could share. I’m eager to contribute and would love to align my efforts with the project’s current goals and expectations. Looking forward to hearing from you! |

Hello everyone!
My name is Yu Cao. I am a second-year master's student studying CS at Brown University, concentrating on AI/ML and software engineering. I am proficient in programming with many popular languages such as Javascript, Python, Golang, C/C++, and Java. I have a strong interest in integrating language models/frameworks into software applications, and find this project aligns perfectly with my interest. In the past, I had an internship experience building a cross-platform app using React Native, but I am also open to developing in Electron.
I looked into last year's discussion about this project. To me, a very important goal of building this desktop app is to utilize NLP models and OpenVINO's ability in an offline environment, and I love that the project description seems to give us plenty of room in the choice of NLP models and use cases. I have some questions in mind that would like to ask OpenVINO mentors for help:
Other than my understanding from the previous year's discussions, are there any shifts or changes for this year's project (e.g., in terms of goals, interest, etc.)?
I feel like it would be great if we could build a voice chatbot! Or from a user's perspective, it would be convenient if we could speak to the chatbot without typing much. Do you think we could apply some ASR or Text-To-Speech models as well? Or if it would be better if we could get a fully functional app done soon and focus only on text NLP models at this point?
Is the app going to be deployed and downloadable somewhere? Or will it serve as a GitHub repo demo?
Other than the development phase, what are your expectations for showcasing this app on blogs?
I would really appreciate it if you could give me some suggestions on these questions;). Looking forward to hearing from you!
