Mixing plotnine and matplotlib

Hello, is it possible to interface with a ggplot by doing something like this:

def custom_plot(ax):
   ax.imshow(...)

ggplot(data, gg.aes(x="x", y="y")) | ggplot.custom(custom_plot)

so that we can mix together plots generated in different ways?

I see that

ggplot().draw().axes[0].imshow(...)

does what I want but I don't think this would work well with plotnine subplot composition.
