Title: Python Project Night – {{Project Name}}
What is Project Night? ChiPy’s Project Night is an open event for anyone/everyone interested in working on Python projects with others, regardless of level of programming experience, and in a safe environment (see our code of conduct at http://www.chipy.org/pages/conduct/). Attendees can join any of the two tracks:
-
Challenges: In this track, organizers will group the attendees into teams of four to solve an hour-long problem together. These problems are fun, hands on coding exercises ranging from pure problem solving, web development or data science. Each team is designed to have diverse experience levels and gives team members equal opportunity to learn and share ideas. This month’s project will use {{scikit-learn}}. Take a look at past projects: https://github.com/chicagopython/CodingWorkshops
-
Projects: Are you working on a personal project and looking for some Python help? Or may be you want to join force with some one who is working on an interesting idea! Either way, this track is for you. Here you have an open space to collaborate with others. Ask for help or help someone else if there's a question you can answer! No problem is too big or too small.
Agenda:
- 6:00pm: Doors Open
- 6:10pm: Announcements (in the Atrium)
- 6:20pm: Food Arrives (in the Kitchen)
- 6:30pm: Work on Projects (Team Challenge or Your Projects)

FAQ:
Q: What if I’m totally new to programming and/or Python? That’s awesome! Project night is a great place to get started. If you have less than a couple of weeks’ worth of basics, we suggest going to the "Your Projects" track. There we will have folks to help get you started. But otherwise feel encouraged to pick whatever interests you most!
For the Team Challenges, here are a few things that's enough to get you going:
- how does lists, dictionaries, and functions work in Python
- how to install packages with pip (https://packaging.python.org/tutorials/installing-packages/)
- read through any additional instructions the organizers might have send out before the project night
Q: What do I need to bring to the project night?
- A laptop with working wifi and power cord
- Python 3. Yep, Python 3 ONLY (https://www.python.org/downloads/) installed
Q: Which text editor/IDE should I use? There is no shortage of great text editors or IDEs that support Python. However, at Project Night we want to make it easy to collaborate with others. Hence we suggest installing either Visual Studio Code (https://code.visualstudio.com/) or Sublime Text (https://www.sublimetext.com/3). These require less effort for setup and makes easy to work with others.
Q: I have another question not listed above. Where do I ask? Register for ChiPy’s Slack (https://joinchipyslack.herokuapp.com/) and ask away at #projectnight channel.
