Open Generals, with the intentional OG acronym, crossed my mind first.

Is "Generals" and/or "Zero Hour" copyright of EA? If so it might be worth considering names that are more..general.

Yes the original names are property of EA. But what we can say is ProductX for C&C Generals Zero Hour, then refer to the original game as its requirement.

I'm trying to draw inspiration from units in the game. A few stick out as good options, based on the meaning or way the unit's lines can be mixed to refer to the project:

Paladin: "Polished and Ready", "You can depend on it"
Avenger: No particular quote, but the name is appropriate. Feels like we are "avenging" the game by maintaining this repo.
Aurora: It's fast and sleek, just like this code base will be. For those without the context, it sounds like a generally nice name too.
Battlemaster: "We are invincible!" (Well, the code base is). Like Aurora, even without the context it sounds like an appropriate RTS engine name.

That's all I can think of for now.

As someone new returning after years of not playing the game, I think having a "generic" name like that would be beneficial for identification and searchability :

1. This project is likely to be forked for mods, so we should try to make it intuitively obvious that this project mostly aims to keep the original essence of the game and mostly includes bug fixes and compatibility improvements.
2. To make the project easy to be searched for and found, we should avoid names that could be interpreted as being a mod with extensive changes. I feel like for pretty much any word we choose, if we append it to "Generals" it'll give that impression. Even for words like "Revival" or similar as they're used frequently when browsing modding websites. Alternatively, I had no clue what "Thyme" was until I stumbled upon xezon projects by a bit of luck! 😅 I don't mean to call any of those poor names, just not the easiest to find when you're from outside the community and are looking to understand the landscape.

Then again I might be overthinking it and having a wild project name could be fun too! And maybe this would make more sense to consider for the public facing release name of the project. And as this is my first post here, I'd simply like to thank all of you for your efforts on modernizing this classic! ❤️

OpenRA didn't port the engine, they wrote their own and their own fan games on top of it, the engine just uses the same file formats for graphics as the original games. A closer comparison to this project is Vanilla Conquer. OpenRA is a bad example of projects being called "OpenX" while not actually being an open source version of that games engine.
