Poor UX on settings/profile page #2182

Description

@YoshiRulz

The main problem is that it's not clear which fields are part of the public profile.

Some other things that could be improved, in no particular order:

  • The "Preselect 'Watch Topic' When Posting" setting isn't touched by Improve UX of topic watch button #2175, so it and any anywhere else on the site which uses the term 'watch' would become out of date. But I think it needed copyediting already.
  • The long descriptions for the avatar, mood avatar, and ivatar fields could do with some copyediting too.
  • Boolean "Yes"/"No" radio buttons? Either use a switch, or rewrite the whole thing with specific labels e.g. "When I receive a private message: (.) Email me ( ) Only notify me on-site".
  • The signature box doesn't link to /ForumMarkup, show the placeholder, have the WYSIWYG toolbar, nor have a diff or preview pane.
  • ivatar UX is still a bit obtuse.
  • The avatar URI that was set when the page loaded could be remembered so that it can be used for a side-by-side comparison.
  • I like Rework User Location into a country dropdown #2180, but as Masterjun pointed out on Discord, it's not searchable. (In FF at least, you can type the start of an <option/> to jump down, but here they start with emoji.)
  • There's an inconsistency in where and how the username, email address, and password settings are presented.
