Hello,

I was wondering how to set up user service autostarting on Devuan, as 0.62 has finally percolated down to the unstable branch. I know you need a reference to pam_openrc.so in some file related to login in /etc/pam.d, and an openrc-user pam.d file that calls the same stuff as a login session. But both of the examples of how this is to be accomplished that I've found (from Artix and Alpine) are not in the pam.d Debian configuration style, and don't even match each other.

For the Artix example, at least, I immediately run into a problem: system-login does not exist on Debian. In its place, seemingly, are five common-* files whose applicability to openrc-user are clear as mud. this seems to be the best explanation for it all; the structure seems to still be in the 'Wheezy' format. My attempts to somehow bodge a config file for openrc-user have not gotten it to automatically switch to the default runlevel, meaning OpenRC stays in sysinit. I'm not even sure if I'm putting pam_openrc.so in a place where it is called and starts.

Where would you put the call for pam_openrc.so in this style of config, and how would you write openrc-user?

pam_openrc.so must be on the session stack for whatever pam files the distro wants auto-startating to affect, usually that is a shared login that is included from say, shadow's login.1, or the display manager, etc

pam/openrc-user needs to include any session modules that set up a local user session, most importantly being a module for XDG_RUNTIME_DIR (e.g. pam_elogind, pam_xdg, pam_dumb_runtimedir)

So it is. Problem is, the only thing it ever says is 'failed to resolve user.irwjs' before either stopping or starting the session. user.irwjs is in the init.d folder, as it should be, so I'm not entirely sure what's wrong here.

Wait, init.d/user doesn't even exist… what have I been symlinking to all this time?

finally, a new error! * supervise-daemon: (null) does not exist

init.d/user is installed by new openrc versions, 0.62 def. has it

could it be a packaging issue? the supervise-daemon is a bug but it means the executable is not found, which leads me to think /usr/libexec/rc/bin/openrc-user is also missing

(we also need /usr/libexec/rc/sh/openrc-user.sh to be installed)

As it turns out, the Debian/Devuan version of OpenRC is missing a few things.
For instance, anything that could be used to get user services running is simply not included in the build. openrc-user is missing, the user script you're supposed to symlink against is missing, and all the other cool things that OpenRC 0.62 has compared to previous releases is just… not there. No wonder I was having issues getting it to work - even when I did the right thing, there wasn't anything there to actuate it.
Compiling from source and placing the missing aspects (a functioning user script in init.d, a functioning openrc-user in /usr/libexec/rc/bin), and everything finally works. I can finally run pipewire without having to put it in every single autostart.

After a wild ride where my entire system became turbo-unbootable, I found out that Debian/Devuan also puts all the stuff OpenRC needs in /usr/lib instead of /usr/libexec. A few quick edits to the version of init.d/user included in the source tree and a symlink fixed everything. Thank you for you help.
