I just got an email from PayPal saying I'm using an outdated version of PayPal on my store. Any support for the new PayPal APIs?

I'm using OpenMage 20.12.0.

Am I correct in guessing that PayPal wants to add all its other payment types to our checkout and not just point out our "outdated" version? Perhaps I'm just being cynical? :-)

IMHO you're not far from the truth.

They are referring to the new checkout, which they call "advanced / expanded", and it also comes with better fees and financial terms.

We were considering implementing it for several clients, but the costs are high.

If we can gather some funds, we can go ahead with the implementation — also because I imagine the old APIs will eventually be deprecated.

In my experience, there's a big issue with this old implementation which they say it's solved with the new API. The issue is sometimes PayPal Express Checkout allows payment only for PayPal users requiring login or registration. It's not possible to pay with the card as not PayPal user. As I said, it happens now and then. PayPal support said I should move to the API v2 in order to avoid this issue.

PayPal has just sent the same notification to all of my Magento 1.x / OpenMage stores, advising us to migrate to the new Bold Commerce integration.
Since PayPal was previously bundled with Magento/OpenMage, I’m reluctant to rely on a third-party plugin for a simple payment, especially in light of Bold Commerce’s Trustpilot ratings (https://www.trustpilot.com/review/boldcommerce.com).

Could the OpenMage core team or community (@colinmollenhour @addison74 @Flyingmana) share any official guidance?

• If we continue using the built-in PayPal code what specific features (if any) will we lose?
• Is it needed an in-house replacement?
• Is there an endorsed alternative to the Bold Commerce module?

But I did hear some people are happy with using a Braintree related module for paypal.

Unfortunately, I'm probably a bit of a black sheep in that I have zero experience with the PayPal checkout.

I can share our experience: I attempted to install and configure Bold Checkout for my client to enable the new PayPal checkout, but it didn't work. I've contacted their technical support and am currently awaiting their response.
